Easiest Fried Mushrooms Recipe

Cooks in 30 minutes Difficulty Easy

It’s funny how our tastes change when we grow up. I’m sure you could name a few foods or meals that you hated as a child but love as an adult. When I was a kid, I wouldn’t touch fried mushrooms with a 10 foot pole, but now I’d eat a full plate of these in one go. So let’s make some today, shall we? 🙂

This is one of those recipes that only require a few ingredients. Mushrooms, flour, eggs, breadcrumbs, salt and black pepper is all we need. Plus some oil of course, as we need to fry them. These fried mushrooms can be served as an appetizer, but you can also make it a full dinner. Just use mashed potatoes as the side. And some sauce is kinda mandatory. I love to dip these golden pockets of flavor into tartar sauce, but feel free to use your favorite type. Oh and some salad on the side, coleslaw for example, that would be a great idea too.

What mushrooms to use for frying?

I’m using either White button mushrooms or Cremini (the brown ones) in most cases. These two types have the right size for frying and taste just great. You might use Portobello or Penny Bun (Porcini) mushrooms as well… I have tried that and both turned out great. But really, no need to overthink this, White button mushrooms are likely the best choice for frying.

Tip: Here is a great resource to lean more about the most popular mushroom types.

Fried Mushrooms Recipe Ingredients

1 pound / 500g of mushrooms of choice, I prefer smallish White button mushrooms or Cremini.
½ cup of all purpose flour
½ cup of breadcrumbs (plain or seasoned)
2-3 eggs (beaten)
Salt & pepper to taste
Vegetable oil (for frying)
Mashed potatoes as the side (optional)

How to make fried mushrooms

Check the video recipe below or read on for step by step instructions.

Let’s start by cleaning the mushrooms and removing the stems. It’s easier to make the breading when the stem is gone. If the stems are large enough, you can bread and fry those too as well. Or leave the stems on, that works too.

Grab a bigger bowl, add about half a cup of all purpose flour and season it with a generous amount of salt.

Add the mushrooms and coat them in the flour properly. Use your hands or a tablespoon to make sure every last bit is covered. And now we can move to the next step.

Crack 2 eggs, season with salt and black better and properly beat them with a fork or a whisk.

Now it’s time to dip the mushrooms in the beaten eggs. Flip them a few times to make sure they are nicely dipped from all sides. If you skip some parts, the breading will not be solid and it might fall off.

And now the final step of the breading procedure. Dredge the mushrooms in breadcrumbs. I’m using regular plain breadcrumbs, but you can use seasoned, panko or Italian breadcrumbs if you want.

Make sure the breading is solid and there are no parts left uncovered. This part is crucial in making the best fried mushrooms that you can. It should look like this:

And it’s time to fry our breaded mushrooms. You need enough oil for the mushrooms to be a bit more than halfway submerged in it. Heat the oil up to medium high heat and let’s start frying. Shake the pan from time to time and once the first side turns golden brown, it’s time to flip.

TIP: Use a high smoking point oil that’s suitable for frying. Regular canola oil is probably the best and most affordable choice.

We’re looking good, the mushrooms are perfectly fried and the color is just great. Let’s take them off the pan and place on a paper towel, so it absorbs the excess fat.

And we are done, I can’t wait to bite into these little pockets of flavor. Dipped in tartar sauce, these mushrooms are just perfect. As mentioned at the beginning, these fried mushrooms can become a full dinner… just serve them with a side of mashed potatoes.
